Token Standards: The Building Blocks of Digital Assets
Section titled “Token Standards: The Building Blocks of Digital Assets”Have you ever wondered why some tokens on your phone’s crypto wallet look the same, while others are completely one-of-a-kind? The answer lies in token standards, technical rules that define how tokens behave on Ethereum and similar blockchains. Understanding these standards helps you choose the right tools for your project, whether you are running a community savings group, issuing impact credits, or building a marketplace for local artisans.
Why Token Standards Matter
Section titled “Why Token Standards Matter”Think of token standards like the rules that make your SIM card work in any phone. Just as a standard SIM works across different networks, token standards let any compatible wallet, app, or exchange work with any compliant token. Without these rules, every token would need custom setup, and that would be chaotic, especially for communities trying to build across different tools and platforms.
For regenerative finance and community projects, token standards matter because they let you build tools that actually work together. If you want to create a local currency, track carbon credits, or set up a loyalty system for your cooperative, standards make it possible without starting from scratch.
ERC-20: The Standard for Interchangeable Tokens
Section titled “ERC-20: The Standard for Interchangeable Tokens”ERC-20 is the most widely used token standard on Ethereum. It covers fungible tokens, assets where every unit is the same as every other unit. One unit is always equal to another, just like a Shilling note equals any other Shilling note.
ERC-20 is used to build:
- Community currencies (similar to how local voucher systems work)
- Governance tokens that let members vote on decisions
- Loyalty and reward systems for cooperatives or savings groups
- Stablecoins like USDC, which stay pegged to a fixed value
Every ERC-20 token has a name (like “Hargesa Savings Token”), a symbol (like “HST”), and a set of basic functions for checking balances and making transfers. The standard also lets one person authorize another, like a cooperative treasurer, to spend tokens on their behalf.
One important limitation: if you send ERC-20 tokens to a smart contract address that cannot receive them, those tokens can become permanently stuck. Always double-check recipient addresses before sending. This has led to over $83 million in lost tokens industry-wide. Many wallets now warn you about incompatible addresses, which helps avoid mistakes.
ERC-721: The Standard for Unique Tokens
Section titled “ERC-721: The Standard for Unique Tokens”ERC-721 changed the game when it launched in 2018. Unlike ERC-20 tokens, every ERC-721 token is completely unique, no two are alike. Each one has its own identity, recorded on the blockchain.
ERC-721 is used for:
- Digital art and collectibles where each piece has a verified owner
- Event tickets where each ticket is distinct
- Ownership certificates for land, credentials, or certifications
- Impact tokens like carbon removal certificates or biodiversity credits, where each credit represents a specific, verifiable action
Every ERC-721 token has a unique ID within its contract. That ID distinguishes it from all other tokens, even those created by the same contract. The standard also includes a “safe transfer” function that only sends tokens to addresses capable of handling them, a safeguard against accidental loss.
ERC-1155: The Flexible Multi-Token Standard
Section titled “ERC-1155: The Flexible Multi-Token Standard”ERC-1155 is the most adaptable option, handling both fungible and non-fungible tokens within a single smart contract. This matters for communities that need to manage multiple asset types at once.
ERC-1155 allows:
- Batch transfers, sending hundreds of different tokens in a single transaction, which saves time and reduces fees
- Lower costs, deploying one contract instead of several
- Semi-fungible tokens, useful for things like event tickets that function as entry passes during an event, then become collectible memorabilia afterward
A regenerative finance project might use fungible tokens for carbon credits and non-fungible tokens for land stewardship certificates, all managed efficiently under one contract.
Choosing the Right Standard

Try This
Section titled “Try This”- Open your crypto wallet and look at the tokens you hold. Try to identify which ones follow ERC-20 (fungible) and which might follow ERC-721 (unique). Most wallets show you the token type.
- If you are part of a cooperative or savings group, think about what kind of token would best serve your community. Would you need interchangeable units like shares, or unique records like certificates of contribution?
- Visit OpenSea and browse the “Collections” section. You will see both ERC-721 NFTs and ERC-1155 multi-token assets. Get a feel for how they are presented differently.
