Which Chain is Right for Your Project?

With over 1,000 distinct blockchains available, choosing the right platform for your project can feel overwhelming. Should you build on Ethereum? Try a Layer 2 for cheaper fees? Or is another chain a better fit? There is no single “best” blockchain, only the right choice for your specific needs. Here is how to think through the decision.

Every blockchain must balance three competing priorities, known as the “blockchain trilemma”:

  • Scalability, Can the network handle growing transaction volumes?
  • Security, How protected is the network against attacks?
  • Decentralization, How widely distributed is network control?

The challenge is that optimizing for one often means compromising on another. Ethereum prioritizes security and decentralization. Solana pushes for massive scalability. Your job is to find the balance that matches your project’s goals.

Your use case should drive your decision. Ask yourself: what are people actually doing with your application?

For high-value financial transactions, large asset transfers, or DeFi protocols, Ethereum Layer 1 is still the gold standard. Its security is unmatched. Yes, fees can be high ($1 to $100 or more during busy periods), but for major transactions that cost is worth paying.

For general apps, NFT projects, or community tools, Layer 2 solutions like Base, Optimism, or Arbitrum inherit Ethereum’s security while offering much lower fees, often $0.01 to $0.10 per transaction. You get the best of both worlds.

For high-volume consumer applications, payments, or gaming, chains like Solana handle thousands of transactions per second with fees typically under $0.001. Just know that this performance comes with some trade-off in decentralization.

For gaming or applications needing heavy scaling, Polygon offers a middle ground, established ecosystem, low fees, and good throughput.

Transactions per second (TPS) matters for user experience. If your app needs to process thousands of transactions quickly, a Layer 1 chain will feel slow. But if you are building something where security matters more than speed, Ethereum is worth the wait.

Consider what is already built on each chain. Building on an established ecosystem means you can connect with existing applications, this is called composability, and it is one of Web3’s superpowers. If there is a DeFi protocol or identity system you want to tap into, check which chain it runs on.

Developer experience matters too. If you already know Solidity (the programming language for Ethereum), you are set for Ethereum and its Layer 2s. If you are open to learning Rust, you unlock Solana and Polkadot. Move is the language of Aptos and Sui.

EVM compatibility is worth understanding. Chains that are “EVM-compatible” (like Polygon, Base, and most Layer 2s) share Ethereum’s technical foundation, making it easier to move code between them. This is useful if you need flexibility to switch chains later.

Not all blockchains are equal on security. Consider:

  • Consensus mechanism: Proof of Stake (PoS) chains like Ethereum, Solana, and Polygon use far less energy than Proof of Work (PoW) chains. Ethereum’s energy consumption dropped by about 99% after its transition in 2022. For regenerative projects, PoS chains are the more aligned choice.
  • Audits: Look for projects that have been reviewed by reputable security firms.
  • Community: Active developer communities mean vulnerabilities get caught and fixed faster.

No chain does everything perfectly. Cross-chain bridges let you move assets and data between blockchains, but they add complexity and some risk. Some platforms like Polkadot and Cosmos are built for interoperability from the start. If your project needs to live across multiple chains, this is worth exploring.

Ask yourself these questions:

  1. What is my primary use case? (DeFi, NFTs, payments, community governance?)
  2. What transaction volume do I expect? (High volume means you need low fees)
  3. How important is security versus scalability? (Financial apps need security first)
  4. Do I need to connect to existing apps? (Check which chain they are on)
  5. Who is my audience? (Crypto-experienced users versus mainstream consumers)
  6. What is my budget for network fees? (Fees affect who can afford to use your app)
  1. Visit Ethereum.org and browse the chain comparison section. Get familiar with what each chain calls itself and what it is optimized for.
  2. Create a simple table for your project with columns for: security, speed, cost, ecosystem, and audience. Score each chain you are considering on each column. Which scores highest overall?
  3. Before committing to any chain, try the relevant test network (a version of the chain that uses fake tokens). Most chains offer free testnets. This lets you experiment without spending real money.
  4. Talk to other community projects in your region. Which chains are they using, and why? Learn from their experience.
